LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER
Our department worked as a dual-service organization, managing both Fire and Paramedic Services for the city. In the Fire service, I specialized in water rescue and hazmat operations.
In the Paramedic Service, I began as an EMT. I then continued my education to become the first licensed Paramedic in the department. My next step was becoming the Paramedic trainer for our department. This role allowed me to train the Firefighters and Paramedics who joined us.
As I moved up in my career, I became a Lieutenant and Acting Captain in operations. As a Training Captain, I was responsible for finding a better way to dry bunker gear.
Finding a bunker gear dryer
In the early 2000’s, I began my research into bunker gear dryers. I visited manufacturers at tradeshows like FDIC and Fire Rescue International. Through my research, I reached two conclusions; first, I discovered that existing bunker gear dryers had been adapted from hose dryers.
Second, long drying times were causing firefighters to skip washing their gear, which created a significant safety issue. It became clear to me that I could do better—and that firefighters deserved better.
I aimed to create a bunker gear dryer that would dry gear from the inside out. It would keep the gear in a fixed position and it also needed to be strong enough for the tough firehouse environment.
This goal became the mandate of our work at Ram Air Gear Dryer.
In 2003, I began the R&D process, and by 2006, I launched the Ram Air Gear Dryer. As our business grew, we assembled a team dedicated to production, sales, and R&D. Through the use of computer-generated models, we optimized airflow, and third-party testing confirmed our results.
Drawing from my experience in training and operations, as well as my desire to support the IAFF brotherhood, I began delivering presentations on the importance of properly laundering firefighter turnout gear. After losing too many comrades to cancer in the fire service, I felt a deep calling to educate others. For the last 15 years, I’ve volunteered to lecture on reducing cancer risks in the fire service—a cause that’s deeply personal to me.
I believe that through education and dialogue, we can eliminate ignorance and complacency about the dangers we face. The more we embrace the research, statistics, and NFPA guidelines, the more lives we will save.
After 30 years with Brandon Fire and Emergency Services, I retired in February 2021. While I miss my brothers and sisters at the fire hall every day, the camaraderie and sense of purpose stay with me.
If you are thinking about a career in the fire service, I strongly recommend it. It is a chance to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Thank you for trusting Ram Air Gear Dryer to provide you with the best bunker gear drying solution!
Sincerely,
Lance Dornn
